Managements invariably,engage into cost cutting ways and upon persistence,they play the game of patience,we shall delay,you can hang around..without gains lets see who loses patience. I stayed on for 2 years,through empty promises,and a paltry retainership. But I refused,all attempts at cheap equipment,NO CHINESE TOYS>>I put my foot down in each meeting. The management changed,I articulated the basics again,and this time, the CEO was perceptive,he pledged the money and in 6 months,my nursery had all the jewels,warmers,ventilators,CPAPs,Phototherapy units,Biliblankets...all from General Electric company,USA.
Back breaking work:
Avoid any mistakes and produce results:In the early stages,team building underway,resources thin,reputation yet to be established,must work with supreme dedication to prevent early demoralization.Neonatal deaths are heartbreaking and create wide uproar,Early loss of face is imminent with laxity.
Investment done:
Bury yourself and hike up admissions..Show some occupancy..But relax inside..the management have their hand in the dough..Now they have to listen..Nurses, support equipment and monetary compensation all will follow..
The stage of protocol Building and staff training:
I worked for two years on building all the documents,for monitoring,recording,treatment charts,exchange transfusion records.Nurses classes were deliberated taken taken,in big numbers,to build interest,spot talent and future NICU nurses,and show off the baby care tips,tricks,mood, feel of a baby care unit.
Teach..Teach...Teach :
I belive big time in the famous nursery line "Nursery is by Nurses".Two years training nurses,and your life shall be much simpler.
Be software savvy:
I encouraged and involved a fairly intelligent fellow wasting himself in the MRD department. Developed de- Novo the NICU software,for recors,Calculations,Nutrition,drug doses and fluid calculations.best part is it is MS access based and makes Natty Discharge summaries.
Miles to go:
Believe babies have a future.. and nurseries too.I am evolving what i call a telepresent medical doctors team 24X7,alongside physical presence.
Engage the Oldies:They earn goodwill,faith of patients and the donkies works are recognised better,with them..in an eventuality they act perfect shields.
Learn handling THE ENEMY OF THE NURSERY.."INFECTION" THE EASY WAY.
Build protocols and process definitions to nip infections in the bud.
